You’re telling yourself all the things that could possibly go wrong. And then there’s the replay. The playback of everything you said, and you start to cringe. Why did I make that joke? Why am I so anxious all the time?
Feeling like you’re not good enough
Anyone who knows you would say you’re accomplished and doing well. You’re probably really good at pretending to have it all together. Inside you feel like everyone has it together except for you. Your girlfriend really knows how to dazzle a crowd. Your partner just got a promotion and everyone is singing his praises. Your sister just took the vacation of a lifetime and you feel like you just can’t keep up. Nevermind that objectively and logically you know that where you are is fine. It doesn’t feel that way and that’s what really matters.
Now you feel urgency in everything you do. You see your friends reaching milestones like promotions, marriages, kids. There’s a feeling of “why not me?.” Wherever you are, no matter how advanced, doesn’t feel like where you should be. If asked though, you’re not sure where “should be” is. It’s a difficult place to be and an awful feeling to have to carry around.
Feeling Like an Imposter
Many accomplished people feel like they’re one mistake away from losing it all. It’s such a frightening place! There’s a looming anxiety that something terrible is waiting, that it’s just around the corner and you just know the other shoe is waiting to drop. If you knew what ”it” was you’d know how to prevent it but it’s hard to deal with “just” a feeling. It may not even be apparent why you feel this way but you do. Constantly. How do you deal with something like this? The only way you know is to tolerate it. To make peace with it and allow it space in your head, always in the background.
You’re So Moody!
When you’re dealing with anxiety, it changes how you interact with the world around you. Others aren’t aware of what’s going on internally. They don’t know what it’s like when there’s so much noise in your head, nor do they know how frustrating it is when you can’t turn it off. It’s impossible to get them to understand what it feels like when every nerve ending is firing; when you feel like something bad can happen at any turn and yet you can’t describe what that bad thing might be. When this is your experience, your body gets overstimulated and you reach overload much quicker than someone who isn’t dealing with this. It often leads to anger, agitation, withdrawal, and frustration. To others you overreact. They may even call you dramatic. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before and you’re not sure they’re wrong. The worst part is not being able to adequately explain what’s going on. If they really understood what was going on they wouldn’t be so quick to judge.
Fake it till you make it
While you’re capable of “dealing with it” and living your daily life, it’s not the quality of life you’d aim for given the choice. If you could magically make it go away, chances are you would. Since it’s so difficult to describe and get others to understand I find that a lot of clients simply trudge on and resign to the mistaken thought that this is just what life is. “Normal” is what you know and if all you know is anxiety, then this becomes the baseline for what life must be. My favorite moment is when my clients say “so this is what it’s like!” It is possible to not have to pretend but to truly be able to manage these emotions and release their control over you.
Whether you’re dealing with anxiety in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Waco, El Paso, San Antonio or Small Town, Texas with a population of 200, online therapy with Tailwinds Counseling can help.
A New Way to Cope
Possibly the toughest thing about “anxiety” is that it runs a continuum. It can mean anything from a bit nervous to panic attacks. That makes it really hard to communicate to others what is going on and can lead to frustration when the problem is misunderstood.
The real issue is not having the tools to deal with what’s going on. This is fixable! It isn’t your fault that you weren’t taught the proper ways to deal with these feelings. With a bit of work and some practice, you can absolutely learn the skills that weren’t taught to you.
I’ve seen this before. You are not alone. It’s time to move from surviving to living. A life where you are comfortable with your decisions, can rest, focus, and fill your life with people who respect you is closer than you think. There is such a thing as life without all of this noise. You had the strength to survive on the struggle bus. We can use that strength to develop new skills and get off that bus. We can work together to make a plan that fits your particular needs and help you move on from here. If you’re finished struggling and ready to find your way out, I’d love to help you make your way out.
HOW This WORKs

LET'S START A CONVERSATION
Schedule a free 15-minute phone call so we can get acquainted. When you schedule your consultation call, you'll receive an email linking you to a brief consultation screening form that will help us make the best use of our time. On the call, I'll ask what you're looking for help with, explain how I work and what you can expect from me, you can ask your questions and we can get you scheduled for an appointment when we agree it's a good fit. And if it's not, I'll try my best to point you in the right direction.
THE FIRST SESSION
After we schedule your first session, you'll receive access to the client portal where you can read about my practice policies and complete the intake paperwork that will help us get started. During our first session, we'll get to know each other, build a therapeutic alliance, and get on the same page about your goals and how best to achieve them. Not sure what to talk about? No worries. During that first 80-minute session, I'll be asking a lot of questions.
WE MAKE A PLAN
You are the expert on your life and experience. Together, we'll collaborate using your expertise and mine to create a plan that suits your treatment and journey.
WE DO THE WORK
Ongoing sessions are 45 - 50 minutes and typically occur weekly to start. We'll get in there and do the work to get you where you want to be. You can always expect homework. Sometimes written, sometimes not, but either way, it's important you do the work outside of session to get to where you want to be.
WE ADJUST AND ADAPT
Sometimes things don't go according to plan. Or maybe things go so well and there's a new path the take. Flexibility is a key part of the process.
YOU GRADUATE
My goal is always to work myself out of a job. I don't want my clients to need me forever; I want you to develop the skills and tools you need to confront whatever challenges lie ahead. As we see progress, we'll discuss a graduation plan. Sometimes that looks like reducing the frequency for a few sessions before stopping therapy. Sometimes it's one graduation session one month after the last weekly PTSD therapy session to summarize and troubleshoot. In any case, we'll collaborate to determine the best graduation strategy for you.
CONSIDER ME, YOUR OWN CHEERING SQUAD
I'm rooting for you every step of the way. And even after graduation, I'm still here if you need me.
